Blakes London
A fresh take on classic Shaker style
This Victorian semidetached house in southwest London was extended and renovated by Jamie Blake of Blakes London. Its design is a modern take on classic Shaker style, featuring more detailed panelling and curved edges.
The grey and white scheme is cool and contemporary, and the stainless steel appliances and Eames DSR side chairs give it a slightly industrial edge.

The units are made from poplar and painted in Pavilion Gray by Farrow & Ball. The worktop is a white quartz called Cimstone.
The room is not only stylish, but highly practical, too. It has a large dining table and a comfortable seating area, so many a dinner party can be enjoyed with friends and family.

A classic design to stand the test of time
In this spacious 1920s home in Hertfordshire, Jeremy Friendship of Studio 3 Kitchens crafted a kitchen that wouldn’t clash with the architectural style of the rest of the house.
To create enough storage without it looking cluttered or bulky, Jeremy opted for a wall of floor-to-ceiling cupboards, with a separate island and preparation areas.

In rich greys and oak, the kitchen is warm and subtle, but not without character. It’s clear why it was a favourite among Houzz users this year.

A calming Cornish kitchen with echoes of the sea
This timber house on the coast needed a kitchen that could truly be the heart of the home, and fit in perfectly with its surroundings. Kitchen designer Stephen Graver of Stephen Graver Ltd chose white with blue accents to bring in the coastal vibe.
The burnt oak flooring adds warmth to the space – both aesthetically and physically with underfloor heating – while the blue keeps the look fresh, with a nod to New England style.

An impressive, double-width island houses various practical appliances, and provides a space for people to gather while meals are being prepared. The black worktop, in Cornish slate, breaks up the space nicely, gives it visual clarity and ties it to the landscape.

A slick, modern design in a period space
Housed in the Victorian extension of a 17th century vicarage in Oxford, this kitchen juxtaposes modernity and tradition in a mindful yet creative way.
Rather than try to blend the kitchen into the architectural style of the vicarage, kitchen designer Marcus Watkins of Bulthaup by Kitchen Architecture chose instead to create something new and unashamedly contemporary.

Floor-to-ceiling aluminium cabinets on either side of the stone fireplace offer an interesting contrast of materials. A large kaolin (off-white) laminate island is echoed by a row of pendant lights, while the cantilevered walnut breakfast bar complements the walnut herringbone floor.
The result is a sleek and highly contemporary kitchen that departs from its traditional surroundings in a harmonious and inventive fashion.

Roundhouse
A design-led space fit for family life
In this home, kitchen designer Jane Powell of Roundhouse wanted to create something that was contemporary but warm; a kitchen that would reflect the personality of the family who lived there.
The brief was to create something functional that had an industrial feel but was also very relaxed and sociable. Matt lacquer cabinets in Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe combine with wood, Corian, stainless steel and brick surfaces to create a look that nods to industrial style while remaining comfortable and inviting.

The room is large and open plan, with a comfortable seating area and a spacious dining area in a glass extension, as well as the kitchen.
The use of space is clever, with the island helping to create clearly defined zones in the expansive space. The room is stylish without feeling overdone, and the wood and grey scheme is beautifully lit by the natural light flooding in from the extension.
