The couple began renovations, taking the space down to the studs and creating a sparkling new dream kitchen. But six months after they’d finished – and just a year after the first pipe break – five more pipes burst and destroyed their newly renovated kitchen. So the couple had to begin again…

BEFORE The family has owned the 120-year-old house since 1999 and has used it both as a full-time residence and as a holiday home. They had renovated most of the house, but had put off redoing the kitchen for budgetary reasons. Before the first pipe burst, the kitchen had not been touched for about 40 years. ‘I painted the old oak cabinets a deep marine blue and painted the walls bright green. Our kids were little at the time, and we just wanted to celebrate being close to the beach,’ Jules says.
When the first pipe broke in 2014, they were living an hour away and using the house as a beach getaway. They must love it an awful lot, because it has given them quite a bit of trouble since. Pictured above is the room taken down to the studs for renovation after the first pipe burst.

This picture shows the kitchen today. After the second pipe burst, the one thing that survived was the durable travertine floor. ‘This floor shows nothing. We come in with sandy feet all the time,’ Jules says. It has five sizes of tiles in driftwood tones, which set the warm neutral palette for the room.
Jules had the chance to get every little detail right after the first renovation wound up becoming an unintentional trial run. She made two significant changes during the second renovation. ‘The first splashback was just flat metro tiles. I decided I wanted something more original,’ she says. She chose hand-moulded metro tiles with more character and depth.
For the island worktop, she replaced the too-precious Carrara marble she’d chosen the first time around with quartzite, which is more durable. ‘I just couldn’t live with the Carrara,’ she says. She chose a 5cm thickness to give it a bigger presence.
Paint: Knitting Needles SW 7672 (walls); Extra White SW 7006 (cupboards); Mindful Gray SW 7016 (island base), all Sherwin-Williams: Extractor, XO.

After having lived with a marine blue and bright green kitchen before the renovations, Jules wanted a different colour palette. ‘I knew I wanted to go with driftwood neutrals and then bring in colour with accessories – navy blue, turquoise and some pops of coral,’ she says.
This bar area lets her do just that. The glass-fronted cabinets display colourful glasses and keep the open feeling. The worktop is the perfect spot to set up a bar when entertaining.

The worktops around the perimeter are the standard 3cm thickness, and the charcoal granite contrasts with all the light colours. ‘This granite has a beautiful crystal pattern in it that sparkles, while the honed finish makes it really durable,’ Jules says.
The island is full of storage all the way around. The sides have spaces for baking trays, platters and chopping boards. Cookware fits under the island, and panel-fronted cabinets without hardware on the stool side provide hidden storage. There’s also a panel-fronted dishwasher tucked in below the sink area.
‘I love my sink – it’s so practical,’ the designer says. It has a chopping board and a colander that fit inside it for easy chopping and clean-up.
Hardware, Richelieu. Tap, Grohe. Range cooker, Thermador.

An important part of both renovations was carving out a boot room, something many houses this age lack. ‘We used to trip over shoes we’d kicked off by the door and dump things on the table all the time,’ Jules says. Now the lower baskets corral all the flip-flops, and the upper baskets hold phones for charging (she installed plugs here for that purpose). Cubbyholes equipped with hooks and baskets keep beach towels, shoes, sunscreen, hats and bags organised next to the door.
The painting here, by local artist Theresa Losa, has special meaning. ‘For years after Hurricane Sandy, everyone was still recovering and felt isolated. Then there was a big local gallery event that was the first big artistic happening since the hurricane,’ Jules says. ‘More than 500 people turned out. It was a feel-good moment that brought the community together and made us feel as if everything was going to be OK.’ The family picked up the painting at the event.

‘The nook was really important – we have lots of kids coming and going constantly, and kids love banquette seating,’ the designer says. The eat-in area takes advantage of the expanse of windows, and the family love to eat, read and work on their laptops here. Horizontal tongue-and-groove panelling ties the area to the boot room and adds a beach-house touch. Cushions bring in brighter colours.
Jules designed the wooden table herself and fashioned the light fixture from a shade she’d ordered for a client that arrived dented. She bought a pendant light kit and wrapped the wire and canopy in twine. She then continued the twine around the shade, which camouflaged the dent and added a subtle nautical touch.
Jules’ husband owns a commercial furniture business in New York City, and she found these chairs while poking through his library. ‘When I saw that they were white on the inside and light grey on the outside, I knew they were perfect for this room,’ she says. Also, because they’re commercial-grade, they can take a lot of beach-house abuse.

‘I knew I needed wall cupboard space, but I wanted to balance the windows on the other wall with a sense of openness,’ Jules says. So she kept a few open shelves backed with the metro tile splashback rather than adding a third cabinet along this wall.

The shelves are a great place to display accessories, adding texture and colour. The breadbin is a beloved piece the designer has had ‘forever’, she says. It’s always too tall to fit into cabinets, so she planned this space to fit it on the worktop to store the family’s bread. The cake stand has three favourite antique purple transferware plates, which hold fresh goods from the bakery during breakfast or veggies from the farmers market.

‘Having to do the renovation twice was quite an experience,’ Jules says. ‘But we feel thankful and blessed to have the new kitchen.’
