A drop ceiling had to be created in the main body of the kitchen extension to incorporate the built-in ceiling extractor, which was a key functional requirement for the large gas hob on the island. Warbrick made a feature out of it by designing a striking curved block to mirror the island unit below.
The owners said from the start they wanted to incorporate curves into the scheme,’ explains Warbrick. ‘Not only does this create a style statement, it softens the space and makes it feel more inviting.’

As their children are older, the homeowners didn’t have to worry about lots of safety features. So they opted to raise the island’s breakfast bar area, which is made of walnut.

‘If you want to eat at an island, we often suggest raising one side of it to make it more user-friendly and to subtly separate the prep area from the eating area,’ explains Warbrick. ‘You just need to opt for slightly higher stools.’

The walnut handles on the units help to tie the breakfast bar into the rest of the scheme. The serving and preparation space on the island has been covered in light Cashmere White granite worktops to match those topping the wall units.
A large, American-style, stainless steel fridge-freezer sits at the back of the room. Choosing not to have this integrated into the units gives the kitchen a contemporary edge. ‘The homeowners are very keen cooks, so all the appliances are top of the range,’ adds Warbrick.

The small sink in the island unit is used primarily for washing fruit and vegetables. The round bowl ensures the sweeping curves of the unit are not interrupted by sharp edges. This sink features a boiling-water tap, which avoids the need for a separate kettle cluttering up the worktop and is conveniently situated near the hob.

The crisp white ceramic double butler’s sink gives a more traditional feel to this side of the kitchen. Plenty of stacking and drying space has been allowed either side of it and the deep sections are perfect for soaking large dishes, such as roasting pans.

‘Our client specified that she wanted to maximise the storage space in here, which is why we opted for a bank of floor-to-ceiling units along this wall. The curved section contains a roomy larder unit,’ explains Warbrick. ‘All the units were painted on site by our team.’
The tall units avoid unnecessary dust traps and ensure there’s no wasted space along the top of the wall.

To help the two spaces flow seamlessly into one another, the kitchen units continue through into the dining area. The glazed display cabinets, however, help this section feel more like a piece of furniture. A wine fridge has also been included, under the TV, for easy access during dinner.

The kitchen units look just as good from the inside. These drawer inserts are made from walnut to match the wood of the island unit and the handles.
