Mad About Your House
Ditch your doors
If you’re keen on the look of open shelving but your rental is filled with wall cabinets, get the look simply by removing the doors and storing them out of sight, ready to reattach them when you move out. You can further personalise the shelves by adding strips of coloured washi tape along the edges.

Give tiles a colour boost
Ask your landlord whether you can paint the kitchen tiles, especially if they’re particularly grotty. Look for specialist tile paint in a range of colours at your local DIY store. If the answer is no, consider tile stickers. Mosaic-style stick-on sheets can be sourced inexpensively, or seek out ‘temporary tattoo’ tile stickers, so-called as they come as transfers and adhere to existing tiles simply with water.

Update cupboard handles
Changing cupboard handles can both unify and smarten up existing cabinets. The vintage brass handles shown here also have the bonus of adding character to this kitchen. Pick similar ones up cheaply from eBay. Stick to handles that require the same fixings as the original ones to avoid having to drill any additional holes.

Cheer up white goods
White goods are generally less than lovely, and tall fridge-freezers are often the most unsightly. If yours is on show, dress it with a blackboard finish, so the whole family can add a little personality. If it’s your own, customise it with chalkboard paint, but if it’s your landlord’s, try chalkboard sticker sheets or even removable wallpaper instead.

Custom colour your cabinetry
It’s always worth asking your landlord whether you can make specific improvements, particularly in a kitchen, which would be costly to renovate. If the space isn’t too big, simply painting the existing cabinets can offer a dramatic transformation. If the units are solid wood, go for an eggshell paint; if they are melamine or veneer, then a ‘difficult surfaces’ paint or chalk paint (such as Annie Sloan) will be your best bet for no-fuss coverage.

Stick on a little style
If painting cupboard doors isn’t possible, it doesn’t mean you can’t get the look of coloured cabinetry. You might associate it with retro craft projects, but sticky back plastic (Fablon) is fantastically useful. If your cupboard doors are flat, you should be able simply to stick sheets over existing doors, ready to peel them off in the future without a trace (always do a patch test somewhere inconspicuous first). Avoid dated-looking faux-wood designs and stick to block colour.

Take it to the top
Try to make use of any redundant space up high near the ceiling. If you’re allowed to install them, simple shelves can make the most of redundant wall space, and prove a handy spot in which to store lesser-used items, such as cake baking supplies. Alternatively, simply store superfluous bits and bobs on top of existing wall cabinets, if ceiling space allows.

Use fabric as a neat disguise
Whether it’s a gap in a run of units or simply an unsightly appliance, a country-style curtain can act as a disguise for anything you want to hide, as well as softening the otherwise hard lines of most kitchen spaces. Upcycle old fabric, such as a tablecloth, to save buying new.

Freshen up your floor
Think there’s no way kitchen flooring could be given a quick fix? You’d be surprised. A basic roll of vinyl, such as a chequerboard design, can often be picked up cheaply from local flooring stores (particularly for a small space where you could get away with an offcut) and simply laid on top of existing flooring, secured only at the edge with carpet tape (check it won’t mark the existing floor in an inconspicuous corner first).
