Pale walls and units form the backbone of this kitchen design and keep the look light, while an island provides multi-tasking space for cooking, relaxing and essential pieces, such as the sink and dishwasher. Good-quality materials have been woven into this pale base, from green-toned granite to gorgeous oak, and the neat design of the kitchen means there’s space for a chunky dining table and benches – perfect for seating a crowd. ‘This is quite a compact kitchen, but we still managed to fit in everything the owners needed,’ says Borthwick.
‘The brief from the owners was to make the space feel nice and open – as open as possible – with big doors that let in lots of light and take advantage of what is not a huge garden,’ he continues.
A wall of units designed to make the most of both vertical and horizontal space are supplemented by a multi-functional island, leaving the remaining space clear for dining furniture and a single piece of beautiful storage.

The new kitchen was installed during a major refurbishment of the whole house. ‘The building had been stripped back, with a new basement floor dug below and another level added at the top,’ explains Borthwick. The kitchen was extended a little near the window to bring the rear of the house into line and folding doors were fitted. ‘So we had a clean, open space ready for us when it came to designing the kitchen,’ he adds.

The dining side of the room features a large table and generous bench seating. It adds a nicely rustic note, which is a warm contrast to the streamlined units. ‘The table top and benches are made with reclaimed timber floorboards,’ says Borthwick. ‘It’s a twist on the traditional trestle design and adds a little bit of interest into that side of the room.’
The cupboard is another characterful piece, made with a reclaimed timber frame and painted tulip wood doors and side panels. ‘It looks great and provides useful storage, too,’ says Borthwick.

A Esmeralda granite worktop with a greenish tone brings interesting depth and colour to the kitchen. ‘I took the owner to one of the stone yards we use a lot so he could choose the worktop stone himself,’ says Borthwick. ‘He went for this one with a dark green tone, which looks great.’

The kitchen island multi-tasks as somewhere to prepare food or enjoy a glass of wine while keeping the chef company, and it also contains a lot of vital kitchen kit. ‘An island was one of the biggest design details to incorporate,’ says Borthwick. ‘If you can fit an island in, it’s great for making the most of space.’ This one contains the bin, dishwasher and sink, with plenty of room for two people to sit and lots of worktop space, too. ‘It therefore reduces the size of any run of cabinets needed,’ he adds.
Four pendants, bought by the owner, hang over the island and pick up on the worktop’s green notes. ‘We nearly always work in odd numbers, but the island is quite long, so four pendants suited that space better,’ says Borthwick.

The basement was dug out beneath the house and now two roof lights, one in the kitchen and one outside in the garden, help light flow into it. ‘There is a large living and media room below,’ says Borthwick. ‘The owners had the option to include privacy glass, so that you couldn’t see down into the space, but they were happy to use regular glass to keep the light going up and down.’

The cabinets are spray-painted with a satin finish. ‘We spent a lot of time with the owner picking colours and chose about four shades of the same core tone,’ says Borthwick. ‘The units are slightly darker than the wall.’

All the cabinetry is lined with oak veneer and handmade in London. The oak is a luxurious detail, warming up the pale unit doors and tying in with the engineered oak flooring.
