The owners were after a New York loft style, but the kitchen also had to respect the dramatic bones and original features of this Georgian home. ‘The owners wanted something unique and were happy to have everything on display,’ says Burke. ‘This is now very much a used and enjoyed family space – practical but great-looking, too.’

This ground floor room was empty when Burke was asked to design the kitchen; it would have been used as a reception room by its previous owners. ‘The house had been in same family since 1920 when my clients bought it,’ Burke says. ‘It hadn’t been updated since about then, either!’
There were lots of original features, though, including handsome mouldings and cornicing, and the proportions were generous. ‘This room has a very high ceiling, about 3.7m,’ Burke says. ‘So I suggested utilising the height by building up to the ceiling and using a ladder to access the top cupboards.’

The owners had already decided on a few key appliances before they began working with Burke. ‘They had their hearts set from the outset on this yellow range by Lacanche,’ he says. ‘They had also chosen a large Liebherr fridge-freezer, and knew they wanted some deep, strong colour in here, too.’
The owners sourced the tiles themselves. ‘They had great style,’ Burke adds.

The top row of cabinets is fitted with mirror insets instead of glass. ‘I’d love to say I thought of that from the start!’ laughs Burke. In fact, installing the mirrors was a good solution to a problem. The extraction system over the cooker had a very large, visible funnel. ‘When we got on site and saw the size of it, we realised you would see it through glass doors,’ says Burke. ‘We ran with the problem and quickly had the idea of using mirrors instead.’
He then continued this idea onto the high cabinets on the opposite side of the room. ‘It just helps the symmetry of the room and you can see all the original coving reflected in it,’ he says.

The chimney breast alcoves are home to two large, handsome dressers. ‘The one on the right is freestanding, while the one on the left is made to look the same, but is actually fixed and houses the fridge-freezer,’ says Burke.

An informal dining space opens off the kitchen, so the owners didn’t want a breakfast bar incorporated into the island. ‘There are two stools at the end,’ says Burke. ‘That’s all they wanted. You can sit and just have a coffee there.’ The island measures 2400mm x 1000mm.

The large fridge-freezer the owners had specified from the start sits within the cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Burke installed the metal grille above. ‘It was so the top cupboards align with those on the other side of the room,’ he says. ‘Practically, it’s quite helpful, too, although strictly speaking it wasn’t needed.’

The cabinets are made with beech doors and frames. The carcasses are in birch ply and the drawers are solid ash with dovetail joints.
In the large dresser next to the fireplace, Burke installed three small pull-out shelves just below the glass-fronted cupboards.

These small shelves are useful for putting the food processor on or for perching a bowl or plate on while the owners reach for food in the glass-fronted cabinet above. ‘There is no worktop on this side of the room, so these are handy,’ says Burke.

In the far corner of the kitchen, a dumb waiter was installed (after these pictures were taken). It connects with the formal dining space on the floor above. ‘I simply recessed some shelves into the partition for the dumb waiter, which now hold jars,’ says Burke.
Two rails on either side support numerous shelves, lined with the spices the owners love for cooking curries. ‘They keep it really neat and tidy and love having everything on display,’ he adds. ‘They don’t want to have to look for things. It’s a lovely feature.’

A single ladder serves all the top cupboards, with rails fitted below to support it. ‘I made the ladder and rails from pine with a walnut stain,’ says Burke. The brackets are polished brass to match the cupboard and drawer handles.
