Kitchen Co-Ordination
Glaze over
With their cool, hard and smooth surfaces, glass and stone are natural partners. And there are now hundreds of colours of back-painted glass to choose from (with most companies, you simply specify the colour you want) so it shouldn’t be hard to find one to match your worktop. Choose a standout shade, or match your splashback to your walls to make your worktop the star of the show.
In this kitchen, the bright turquoise splashbacks, lit by under-unit spots, really lift the grey and white cabinets trimmed with soft grey quartz worktops. Always remember to order samples, however, as the colour can often look different to the one on the test card.

Go low with a smart upstand
Here, Silestone engineered stone worktops extend up the wall – but this time only to create a slim, elegant band, or upstand. The subtle contrast between the pale stone and all-white kitchen adds gentle texture rather than making a bold statement in this Scandi-style kitchen.

Keep it simple
For an inviting farmhouse look, team neutral, rustic-style metro tiles with smooth slabs of stone worktop. In this kitchen, the textured, white, brick-shaped tiles and white marble work surface crisp up the taupe colour scheme for a warm but fresh result.

Work stone on stone
It’s common to continue a granite or other stone worktop up onto the wall to act as a splashback, as shown here. This can end up being more economical, too, as you will be buying more in bulk and the same fitter can install the lot.
In an eclectic kitchen like this, the streamlined look can be particularly effective, as a unified backdrop will calm things down when there’s lots going on.

Match with metallics
Use on-trend reflective copper- or bronze-coloured tiles to create a striking contrast with your stone worktops. This will look particularly good with granite infused with a fleck in a similar colour. Here, copper-coloured reflective tiles sit elegantly on top of a sleek, silver-veined marble surface.

Take time to reflect
Mirrored splashbacks can be cut to almost any size and are particularly good additions to dark or compact kitchens. Teamed with glossy stone worktops, they will help to bounce what light there is around the room and add an illusion of depth.
If your kitchen is compact but light, then matt stone worktops can be just as effective, with the mirrors helping to visually boost the space.

Big up bare brick
Providing it’s sealed, bare brick can be a very effective splashback and it works particularly well teamed with a clean matt stone worktop to create a minimalist industrial look. The directional lighting in this kitchen ensures the brick walls are the focal point of the room.

Get in the picture
From beach scenes to piano keys, the latest digital imaging technology makes it possible to fuse almost any image onto a glass splashback. It’s a modern style that works best with contemporary composite stone worktops in plain colours, so that the two surfaces aren’t fighting for attention.
Here, a print of a vintage map has been teamed with minimalist white units and white stone worktops to link this contemporary kitchen to the property’s period heritage.

Plump for patterned tiles
There are so many different patterned tiles available that it’s possible to find a design to work with both contemporary and traditional kitchen units and any colour of stone worktop.
The only proviso here is to be careful when teaming a two-tone stone, such as marble or flecked granite, with patterned tiles, as the look could be too fussy. Here, however, the grey and white of the marble links the grey units and the burnt orange and white tiles nicely.
