“This kitchen transformation was the last stage of a complete house overhaul for the owners,” explains designer Stella Kordista. “They wanted something timeless that was full of light and, as they’re both keen cooks, it had to work on a practical level, too.”
In order to increase the amount of space available for the kitchen, Kordista added side return and rear extensions to the Victorian property. The side return features three Velux skylights to enhance the natural light, with a clever remote-control feature for easy opening and closing.

“The most challenging aspect of the design was working within a relatively limited space to fit in all the homeowners required,” says Kordista.
Adding an island unit was a great way to ensure the space was used as efficiently as possible, and it also doubles up as a handy breakfast bar. Pendant lights above the island offer plenty of task lighting and create a stylish focal point.

In keeping with the bright, contemporary feel, the kitchen features bespoke units, hand-painted in a soft, pale shade. “The homeowners considered dark worktops, but saw a similar kitchen with pale ones that looked more contemporary,” says Kordista. “The units and worktops sit well with the pale porcelain floor tiles.”

The kitchen’s centrepiece is the huge dual-fuel range cooker. “With the cooker opposite the island unit, it creates an efficient working triangle with plenty of space to prep in,” says Kordista.
A large stainless-steel splashback adds a contemporary edge and reflects the light, keeping the space bright, while the extractor fan is neatly hidden in the mantel above.

Polished chrome knobs on the cabinets echo the stainless steel and chrome used elsewhere in the kitchen and create the timeless, contemporary feel the homeowners were after.

The hard-working island unit also features a handy integrated bin and dishwasher either side of the sink.

“As well as the new roof windows, we increased the light in the room by swapping the existing, bay-shaped French doors for contemporary bifolding ones,” says Kordista. “These ensure a great view of the garden when the couple are dining.”
