Kitchen of the Week: A Sunny Space with Clean Lines and Warm Wood- At its best, a kitchen is an open, clean, light-filled space that can simultaneously work as a calm refuge in the mornings before a packed day and as a convivial place to gather with friends and family. Designer John McNeil kept these ideals in mind when he created this brand-new kitchen for a professional couple with young children. ‘We like to work really closely with our clients, and with this project they put in a lot of effort, too,’ he says. Kitchen of the Week: Clean Lines and Cool Colours in a London Terrace- When she began thinking about installing a new kitchen, crisp and clean were the words the owner of this Victorian terraced house in south London came up with. ‘She was looking for a design that would feel softly industrial and contemporary, but was made with traditional materials,’ says Tim Higham of Higham Furniture, who designed, made and installed the new kitchen. ‘We went for a simple framed Shaker kitchen,’ says Tim. ‘It has cleaner lines than traditional Shaker cabinets, to keep the space looking airy.’ Tim had to build around a chimneybreast and a huge bay window at the front of the house, while also making sure the design made the most of the abundant natural light in this double-aspect room. The result is a brilliantly functional room that, despite being loaded with storage, feels light and spacious.

Kitchen of the Week: A Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Made for Family Life- It’s often said the kitchen is the heart of the home, but for this family – which includes three children under 11 – it really is. When it came to designing the kitchen in their Essex farmhouse, they were keen to also incorporate a dining area, boot room, scullery and walk-in larder. ‘The owners wanted the whole area to cater for all their family’s needs,’ says Peter Humphrey of Humphrey Munson Kitchens, who designed the space. ‘That meant family cooking and mealtimes, but also space for homework and play and for comfortably hosting parties and celebrations.’

In addition to making the space function well, it had to have longevity, and quality became a byword for this build. ‘Everything in here will be to be able to stand the test of time,’ says Humphrey.
