“We were called in quite early when the owners were still discussing the plans with the architect and interior designer,” says Nikki Davis of Kitchen Architecture, who designed the kitchen. “We didn’t change anything within the space we were given.” Instead, Davis worked with this dramatic room to create a beautiful kitchen that complements its contemporary backdrop while also perfectly suiting family life.

“The brief for this kitchen was quite simple,” says Davis. “The owners wanted an extremely functional space for a family home, as they do a lot of cooking and entertaining.” The design also had to be in keeping with the rest of the house, which had been completely renovated. “It’s a very contemporary, clean look,” adds Davis.

A beautiful glass extension was built some 1.5m beyond the footprint of an existing rear conservatory structure. The entire house has been modernised and redesigned by architect James Cattle at Snell David and the interior designed by Amanda Durham Interior Design.

The incredible ceiling height in the kitchen was a key challenge of this project. “The wall measures 4.58m from floor to ceiling,” says Davis. “The owners originally wanted units across this wall, but the design became very kitchen-like, if you know what I mean! The units looked too heavy up on the wall. So instead we kept it clean and softened it with a shelf in a different material.”
The shelf is made from structured oak veneer. “It’s a big, fabulous wall that could feel a bit daunting, but we decided to celebrate it rather than fight it,” says Davis.

A glass wall on the floor above means you can look down on the kitchen. “We could have designed units to look neat from above,” Davis says, “but with a shelf, the owners have the choice to decorate it as much or as little as they like, to add interest.”
Embracing the size and scale of the wall was important, but the shelf does much to warm it up. “This is a big grey wall, but decorating the shelf carefully ensures the balance is right in the space,” he adds.

Despite not having any wall units, the run of base cabinets is so long, there’s still plenty of storage. The island also contains storage on both sides.
The long wall also contains the dishwasher, sink, bins, crockery and cutlery storage, plus a wine fridge.

A neat desk in structured oak veneer was added at the end of the run of low cabinets, with small drawers next to it to store the owners’ paperwork and children’s homework. “The laptop can fit in, too, so this whole desk space can be completely tidied away,” says Davis.

Thanks to an abundance of innovative glazing, the kitchen and dining space are flooded with light. Pendants hang over the island and industrial spots, which can be pivoted and directed to where they’re needed, are fitted in the ceiling. “The owner says she hardly uses them though, as it’s so light in here already,” says Davis.
The kitchen has UV protection, which is helpful in such a bright, light-filled space. “It means everything is quite resilient,” says Davis.

Fitting an extractor over the induction hob was a challenge, due to the height of the ceiling. “We had it made specially,” says Davis. “It blends in with the pendant lights alongside it.”

The large island measures 306cm by 111cm and has storage and seating on both sides. “It offers a huge amount of work space,” says Davis. “You can also work on the hob, so if you’re rolling out pasta or baking, you can simply stretch across it.”
The island’s worktop is thicker than on the run of units. “The bar and sitting areas are here and a thin worktop might not have been strong enough to support children leaning over it or someone sitting on it,” explains Davis. “This thick worktop has better structure and rigidity than the 10mm one used on the cabinets.”
