Inspire Your Space
Take an inventory
This can involve writing down everything in your drawers or just taking a visual inventory, where you spread the drawer contents out on the floor and really look at what you own. Often items find their way into kitchen drawers by chance and then we continue to store them there. But that doesn’t mean the kitchen drawer is the right place for a bike pump or bag of balloons. Simply writing down what you have or taking a long hard look at it will help you see what you have stashed here and help you to work out alternative homes for some of the items. It will also help you to identify those bits and bobs that are useless, too.

Try the four-basket technique
This is a classic method for sorting through your stuff – the Snog, Marry, Avoid of the clutter-busting world! Get four containers and assign each a different purpose. One is for rubbish, one for items that could go to charity, one for things you will keep, and the final one for stuff you need to relocate. With these four categories in mind, it’s much easier to scrutinise your possessions and make a decision about their future.

Devise creative solutions
Once you’ve worked out what’s allowed back in the drawer, be creative with how you keep it neat. You don’t need to buy expensive boxes and trays to organise your drawers. Sometimes, the ideal storage kit is all around you. Old jam jars can hold pencils or rubber bands. Freezer bags can keep loose change, batteries, clips or matches tidy. Even a humble card folder can help win the battle to bust the takeaway menus. Use your imagination and you’ll save money as you restore order.

Create alternative storage
See if any of the items currently stored in your kitchen drawer could be hung up on rails or tucked into jars or tubs on the worktop. Rails with simple S hooks look neat and keep everything from spoons to pans and colanders neatly to hand. This frees up space in the drawers for those bits and bobs you don’t want to display – the food bags, mini blenders and spare batteries we all need, but don’t want to look at.

Sounds like a daft idea, but if you take a photo of your newly tidy kitchen drawer, you record and celebrate your achievement. This image can then act as a reference – it’s the tidy state you want that drawer always to be in – and a plan, which you can follow if you ever need to tackle the drawer again.
