Charlotte contacted Jeremy following a recommendation from a friend and gave him the simplest of briefs: to maximise the use of space in the new extension and create a kitchen that would blend in effortlessly with the rest of house. ‘Charlotte wanted a kitchen that would stand the test of time and not look out of place as you move through to the older parts of the house,’ explains Jeremy.
The result is a calming scheme in a muted palette of soft greys and white, with ample space to accommodate a burgeoning family. ‘It’s very much the heart of the house,’ says Jeremy. ‘And it sits perfectly balanced between contemporary and traditional, so it will never date.’

Charlotte wanted lots of storage space without resorting to ‘heavy’ overhead cupboards. ‘It was important to preserve the spacious and airy feel in the kitchen, so we’ve integrated floor-to-ceiling cupboards into the rear wall,’ explains Jeremy. ‘It’s an elegant solution and is a great for keeping clutter hidden away.’

The tall, light-coloured units blend seamlessly into the wall, enhancing the sense of light and space in the room. When it came to the layout of the kitchen, Jeremy tore up the rule book and introduced dedicated work zones. ‘I used to chef many years ago, so I tend not to work with the traditional kitchen triangle. I prefer to work with prepping, cooking and cleaning zones for a fluid approach to the space.’

‘If you’re going to have a kitchen island, then I firmly believe you should show it off and be proud,’ says Jeremy. ‘The grey colour is punchy but very easy to live with – grey’s having a nice run of fashion at the moment.’ Jeremy painted the island and units in Little Greene’s Dark Lead, and used French Grey Mid on the tall cupboards on the back wall. The elegant wooden stools are from Hee Welling and Hay.

‘We were constrained by the size of the quartz stone slab when it came to designing the island,’ explains Jeremy. As it is, the double-sized unit houses ample storage for appliances, as well as the five-ring Caple hob. A Westin extractor fan integrated into the ceiling has been painted the same colour as the units and is almost invisible. ‘The fan is actually mounted on the outside of the building, which means it’s also very quiet,’ says Jeremy.

Jeremy juxtaposed the bold grey colour of the units with richly textured oak on the adjoining breakfast bar. ‘It’s a wonderful contrast and gives the scheme more depth,’ he explains.

Hidden beneath the smooth, clean lines of the calming scheme are a host of concealed mod-cons. ‘We wanted to keep the look uncluttered, but there’s everything you’d expect to find in a thoroughly modern kitchen – you just can’t always see it!’ says Jeremy. In this image, an EVOline Port power system extends from the worktop, where it fits snugly away when not in use.

Porcelain floor tiles glimmer with light reflected from the floor-to-ceiling windows and provide a durable, scratch-proof surface that suits the busy family. ‘The pale flooring contrasts beautifully with the bold grey units,’ says Jeremy. ‘It stops the look becoming too oppressive.’

‘It’s a very practical kitchen,’ says Jeremy. ‘Charlotte does a lot of entertaining, so we’ve given her plenty of worktop space for prepping.’ Solid oak dovetailed drawers with simple stainless steel handles hint at Jeremy’s passion for timeless quality. ‘I normally tend to steer clients towards keeping their kitchens fairly neutral,’ he says. ‘A quality kitchen is an investment, so it’s important not to be swayed by fads.’

‘Charlotte and I spent a lot of time discussing the lighting. Then one day we were scrolling through the internet and hit upon these. I knew immediately they’d be a perfect fit,’ remembers Jeremy. The glass pendants from &tradition add a touch of industrial chic without overpowering the scheme.

Jeremy used solid maple wood for the kitchen cabinets. ‘It’s a wonderful timber to work with,’ he explains. ‘When it’s painted, you get a very smooth finish, as opposed to oak, where the grain tends to be visible through the paint.’

Open cabinets next to the cooker are finished in oak to lift the neutral scheme. ‘Light colours tend to dominate the room, so I wanted to bring back a little warmth,’ explains Jeremy. Soft lighting in the alcove emphasises the warming yellow tones in the wood.

Two Küppersbusch ovens provide Charlotte with plenty of shelf space for cooking during busy dinner parties. ‘This is very much an entertaining space, so two single ovens was the natural solution. Double ovens are not particularly efficient,’ says Jeremy.

‘In summer, this becomes a lovely indoor/outdoor space,’ says Jeremy. ‘Charlotte wanted to flood the kitchen with natural light, so opening up the back of the house was the best solution.’ The simple lines of the John Lewis table complement the unfussy kitchen scheme, while Calligaris Jam dining chairs add a touch of bright colour.
